Amitabh Harivansh Rai Shrivastava was born on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Munna, Big B, Angry Young Man, AB Sr., Amith, and Shahenshah are some of his Bollywood nicknames. Padma Shri in 1984, Padma Bhushan in 2001, and Padma Vibhushan in 2015 were among the many popular accolades he earned from the Indian government.

He was born to Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a Hindu father, and Teji Bachchan, a Sikh mother, into a Kayastha Hindu household. His stepmother is Shyama. Amitabh was given the name Inquilaab after an Urdu phrase Inquilab Zindabad, but his father changed his name to Amitabh when his father’s colleague poet Sumitranandan Pant suggested it. His surname was Shrivastava, but his father changed it to Bachchan as a pen name. Ajitabh Bachchan is his younger brother.

Amitabh had a brief relationship with Parveen Babi, Rekha, and Jaya Bhaduri, three Indian actors. He married Jaya Bhaduri on June 3, 1973, and the couple has two children: Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, who is also an actor.


He attended Jnana Pramodhini Boys High School in Allahabad and Kirori Mal College in New Delhi, India, for his education and graduation (B.Sc.). He aspired to be an engineer and wanted to join the Indian Air Force at first. He began working with Shaw Wallace after finishing his studies. Later, he began working for the shipping business Bird and Co. as a freight broker.

In the Bollywood film Saat Hindustani, in which he portrayed the part of Anwar Ali, he got his first break as an actor in 1969.

He entered politics in 1984 to assist his buddy Rajiv Gandhi. In the ninth Lok Sabha elections, he ran against Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna for the Allahabad seat. With 68.2 percent of the vote, he won the seat with the greatest win margin in the history of the general election. After three years in politics, he quit, calling politics a sewer.

He took a hiatus from acting to establish his own firm, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd. (ABCL), with the goal of introducing services and products that span the whole spectrum of India’s entertainment sector. The firm was founded in 1996 and has since produced many films, none of which have been successful.

In 1997, he returned to acting with the Bollywood film Mrityudata, which was produced by ABCL, however the film was critically and commercially unsuccessful.
